Why spending time on 'fun' projects isn't wasting time - it's investing in the spirit that drives the joy of building and innovation
I've been spending probably more time than I should the past couple of months building things I think are fun.
The best stretches of my career have been when I was part of something that was making huge progress in building something and having lots of fun at the same time.
I think we're in a moment right now where it's possible to create situations like that more easily than ever, if any ossified barriers in the way can be broken down.
It's why I'm ok "wasting" some hours making a fun animation for the hero of my website or building a "game" into it inspired by the things that got me excited about this field in the first place 30+ years ago - to represent that spirit of that.
I recently got good feedback that my tagline is "get human help to build better with ai" but my avatar was in pixel art which didn't make sense to a new visitor. Point taken. But, I don't want to lose the fun of the early 90s era theme that reflects my mission of fostering the joy of building.
So, I spent another few hours making assets with nano banana (including my new head shot) and working with agents to make a transition that I hope reflects humanity and fun.
